Lesson 9 Back Nasal Simple or Compound Vowels: ɑng,eng, ing, ong,iɑng,uɑng,iong, ueng

Before learning these vowels, we need to learn the back nasal “ng”.

ng

“ng” is a back nasal. To produce this sound, raise the root of the tongue and press it against the soft palate tightly to block the air stream completely from the trachea. Then let the air out from the nasal cavity with vibrating vocal cords.

ɑng

This sound is produced by pronouncing the Chinese simple vowel “ɑ” shortly, followed by the back nasal “ng”.

eng

First place the tongue in the position of pronouncing the Chinese simple vowel “e”. Then move the tip of the tongue slightly forward by pronouncing the “e” in “eng” shortly, followed by the back nasal “ng”.

ing

This sound results from pronouncing the Chinese simple vowel “i”, followed by the back nasal “ng”.

ong

Place the tongue in the position to pronounce the simple vowel “o”, then open your mouth slightly wider to make the “o” sound in “ong” and quickly move to pronounce the back nasal “ng”.

iɑng

Pronounce the simple vowel “i”, followed by the “ɑng” sound.

uɑng

Pronounce the simple vowel “u”, followed by the “ɑng” sound.

iong

Pronounce the simple vowel “i”, followed by the “ong” sound.

ueng

Pronounce the simple vowel “u”, followed by the “eng” sound.
