拾金不昧means one does not pocket the money one picks up.
Here is a true story happened recently in China. When leaving a taxi one day a company manager left his cell phone in the car. When the taxi driver discovered the cell phone he knew that the phone’s owner must be very worried about his lost phone, so he tried to find him. However, the manager had not left his name and address with the driver, so it was only after great effort that the driver finally found him.
When the manager saw his lost cell phone, he was touched by the driver’s noble efforts and asked for the driver’s home address. That weekend, the manager visited the driver and presented him with an envelope saying that there was just a thank-you note inside. After the Manager left, the driver opened the envelope. To his surprise, in addition to the thank-you note there was also one thousand dollars!
This situation generates an ethical question: If the driver accepts the money, can we still consider him to have 拾金不昧? If you were the driver, would you accept the reward money or not?
