58.雨部 rain
呼summon风wind唤call for雨rain
In the Ya’an雅安 area of Sichuan Province四川省 there is a mountain with an ancient well at its peak. According to the local chronicles’, this well could summon the wind and call forth the rain whenever people removed its cover. Local people considered the well to be a magical gift from the gods. Because of this, the well has become the subject of national legend.
Modern scientific study has provided a possible explanation to this ancient myth. Due to geographic location, the air in the area is very moist, and during most of the year, this area is quiet rainy. So the well does not cause the rain, it is simply the local climate. It is possible that occasionally when local people removed the cover of the well, it coincidently started rain. This may be why the well is afforded magical powers in the local historical records.
Now we use 呼风唤雨to describe mankind’s ability to control the forces of nature. It is also used to describe someone who is very capable of stirring up trouble.
