孔雀peacock东east南south飞fly
孔雀东南飞is a well known poem from the Han Dynasty. The poem is a tragedy about a tragic marriage.
The story took place in Anhui Province安徽省 sometime between the years 196 and 219.
Liu Lanzhi刘兰芝, the wife of a county official, was forced to divorce her husband. Out of devotion to her former husband, Liu resolved to never marry again. Her parents wanted her to get remarried however, because a divorced woman staying with her parents was socially unacceptable at that time. With no way to escape a second marriage, Liu committed suicide. When Liu’s former husband learned of her death he was overwhelmed by sadness and also committed suicide in their former home.
To honor this couple’s deep love, a poet wrote this poem, the first two lines of which read: 孔雀东南飞,五里一徘徊the peacock is flying towards the southeast, but it looks back every five li.
