程Chen门door立stand雪snow
During the Northern Song Dynasty北宋, there lived a man named Yang Shi杨时.
Although Yang passed the highest civil service examination, he was very modest and always willing to learn new things from other scholars and also his mentor, the famous scholar Cheng Yi程颐.
One day Yang and his friend went to Cheng’s home seeking advice. At the door, they were told that Cheng was taking a nap. Yang decided not to disturb his mentor. So he and his friend waited outside the door. Very soon it began to snow. The snow became heavier and heavier. When Cheng finally got up from his nap, he discovered two snowmen standing outside of his house.
Cheng was very touched. He was honored Yang and his friend valued his opinion so highly, and he admired Yang and his friend’s persistence and sincerity in the pursuit of knowledge.
Later, people use 程门立雪to praise those who show great respect for their mentors and determinedly seek knowledge.

【解释】指学生恭敬受教,现指尊敬师长。比喻求学心切和对有学问长者的尊敬。
【出处】《宋史·杨时传》:“至是,游酢、杨时见程颐于洛(今洛阳),时盖年四十矣。一日见颐,颐偶瞑坐,游酢与时侍立不去。颐既觉,则门外雪深一尺矣。”
