公public而as to忘forget私selfish

During the Warring States Period, there was a government official named Qi HuangYang祁黄羊.

Once, ther Emperor of the Jin State asked Qi to nominate a capable person to be the county magistrate. Unexpectedly, Qi nominated a person who had offended him before.

Later, the Emperor asked him to nominate another person be the commander-in-chief. Qi nominated his own son regardless of other people’s disapproval.

Qi always recommended people whom Qi considered would best serve the country rather than those who would advance his own interests.

Confucius praised Qi as a 公而忘私person. 公而忘私means to put the interests of the public before personal advancement.

【拼音】gōng ér wàng sī

【解释】为了公事而不考虑私事,为了集体利益而不考虑个人得失,不去讲究个人恩怨。

【出处】东汉·班固《汉书·贾谊传》:“故化成俗定,则为人臣者主耳忘身,国而忘家,公而忘私,利不苟就,害不苟去,唯义所在。”
