占卜divination (specifically: to divine by means of the Eight Diagrams八卦 as described in the Book of Changes) in Chinese history is a method of fortune-telling. Divination played an important role in people’s lives during the pre-science era. While based in superstition, it gave rise to many of the rational mainstays of Chinese society, such as the early Chinese writing system, philosophies, mathematics, astronomy, geology, and archeology.
