Ouyang Xiu欧阳修 was a great scholar during the Northern Song period. He was renowned as a noble-minded person and a great writer.
One day, Ouyang Xiu's friend Fan Zhongyan范仲淹 came to visit him. Fan chatted with Ouyang's subordinate—a man named Lv. During their conversation, Fan told Lv about a Chinese saying - "things that are close to vermilion are reddened and things that are close to ink are blackened."
He thought Lv was a such lucky man to be able to work closely with a great scholar like Ouyang Xiu, because Lv would be reddened - his character would be bettered and he would learn a lot from Ouyang Xiu.
近朱者赤,近墨者黑 is similar to the English saying "He who keeps company with the wolf will learn to howl."
