90.走部 to run; to walk

走runing 马horse 观watching 花flowers

走马观花 —seeing flowers while riding on horseback - came from a peom written by a famous Tang poet. Meng Jiao孟郊.

When Meng Jiao was young, he studied very hard but repeatedly failed the Civil Service Exam科举, which was the prerequisite to attaining a government post. However, at the age of 46, Meng Jiao finally passed the exam and became a successful candidate for government office.

He wrote the two lines: 春风得意马蹄疾,一日看尽长安花, flushed with success, the horse runs fast, seeing all the flowers of Chang’an city in just one day.

These lines expressed his unbridled elation at his accomplishment. Now, the expression 走马观花 has come to describe when people gain only a superficial understanding of a situation through only a cursory observation or visit.
