门当door sleepers (underneath of the door) 户对door pillars (on the top of door frame)
In traditional Chinese architecture, door sleepers and door pillars were used as decorations for a traditional Chinese two-leaf door. In traditional China, rich families were very particular about the ornamentation on their doors, because they reflected the family's wealth and glory.
Different designs and materials signified different economic condition, social status, and occupations. In fact, before betrothing their children, family members would send a servant to observe the quality of the prospective bride or groom's door derations to determine whether the prospective family was rich or poor.
Because of this, 门当户对 later came to be used to refer to an affianced couple who are well-matched in terms of social and economic condition,
