良good 工worker 巧skillful 匠craftsman
Lu Ban鲁班, was a carpenter in ancient times. He was regarded as a 良工巧匠 — a highly skilled craftsman. When Lu Ban was very young, his family was very poor. He had to leave home and go to Zhongnan Mountain终南山 to be the apprentice of a master carpenter.
His journey to Zhongnan Mountain was full of hardship, but he was not discouraged. When he finally reached his future master's home the carpenter seemed to have no intention of training him. He set Lu Ban to mential tasks, such as sharpening discussed and rusty woodworking like axes. Lu Ban spent seven days and nights making them sharp and shining again.
Then the master asked him to cut down a thousand year-old tree and make it into a smooth helm with two-thousand holes. Lu Ban did not complain. He worked steadily for twelve days and nights until he finally completed his task.
His master was pleased by his diligence and finally revealed to Lu Ban his own wonderful models that were collected in a private shown. He did not tell Lu Ban how to recreate these pieces, instead he instructing Lu Ban to figure out himself. Lu Ban was determined to learn his master's skills. He studied his master's woodwork.
After three years of hard work. Lu Ban had become a master of his craftsman and became a well-known carpenter.
