夏summer 至arrive 和and 冬winter 至arrive
In the Chinese lunar calendar, in addition to twelve months based on the moon, the lunar year is also divided into twenty-four solar periods based on the solar year. Each solar period is approximately 15 days and is named after natural phenomenon that generally occur during that period.
夏至 and 春分 are two names of the twenty-four solar periods. The 10th of the 24 solar periods is called the beginning of summer because it begins with the Summer Solstice, 夏至. It usually occurs around June 21 to 22 in the Gregorian Calendar. Winter begins on 冬至—the Winter Solstice, which is the 22 of the 24 solar periods. It usually occurs sometime between December 21 to 23.
The twenty-four solar periods are very useful to Chinese farmers because they signal the best times for planting and harvesting.
