有 have 的 target 放 release 矢 arrow

有的放矢 means to shoot the arrow at the target. It is used to describe people who have a well-defined objective and a feasible plan in mind before taking action. Below is a Chinese fable that illustrates this idea.

In ancient times, there were two monks living in a temple deep in the mountains. Both of them had never seen the sea. They decided to travel to the South Sea, but weren’t sure how they should get there.

Monk Wang planned to walk there on foot. He said, “It may take a very long time to get there by walking, but it is very practical. There are thousands of temples in China. I can find a temple or monastery in almost every village to sleep in at night, and beg in for food.”

Monk Li’s plan was to make a ship and ride down the river to the South Sea. The next day, Monk Wang set out on his journey. Monk Li set about to build his ship. He hadn’t realized making a ship was so difficult. The carpenter in the mountains had no shipbuilding experience and Monk Li did not have enough money to hire an experienced carpenter from far away.

After a year, his ship was still just a dream. But Monk Wang had not only made it to the South Sea, he had returned to the mountains. He told Monk Li his experiences travelling and the beauty of the sea. Monk Li realized that Monk Wang’s success was owing to his 有的放矢.
